Charlie: Journeyman Plumber

She's been a journeyman plumber for 25 years.

I heard about Charlie while my friend Jane was in the middle of a full bathroom reno. She told me about a woman who was in the 50s and had her own business. I had to meet her.

Tina: Journeyman Painter

Tina has been a Journeyman painter for 20 years.

By 25, Tina was divorced and a single mom to two small kids. She started her business with a ladder strapped to the top of her station wagon. She was the first to drop off and the last to pick up her kids from daycare, because she had to work to feed her kids.

Tina and Kathleen used to work for a program called... They went out and spoke to women around Alberta who were interested in getting skilled. Funding cuts squashed that program in 1998, but Tina never stopped telling her story and her passion is in getting single moms working in the skilled trades. I admire her for that.

Since 2007, Tina has been working as an Apprenticeship Consultant with the Government of Alberta. She manages the files of hundreds of Alberta Apprentices and goes into the field to speak, inspire and motivate.

Her story matters. There are other single moms out there who need to know that you can get out there and work, get skilled, get trained and get your Journeyman ticket.

Life as you know it today doesn't have to be that way 25 years down the road. Just ask Tina if you're ever unsure about that.

Kathleen: Red Seal Carpenter

Kathleen has been a Red Seal Journeyman carpenter for 25 years.

I met Kathleen when I started lingering around the Vermilion Skills YWCA Training Centre. She was an educator in that program and has trained and encouraged many young men and women to make a career in the skilled trades.

Kathleen has moved on from the YWCA, but her desire to inspire and motivate young women into the trades is something she will never move on from. When it's in you, it's in you.

Kathleen is my personal friend. She's able to keep her head up and move on no matter the circumstance. For that I admire her endlessly and am forever inspired. And for a 56 year old woman, she looks damn good.

Simone: Journeyman Painter Decorator

Wall coverings, aka wallpaper, are back in a big way.
Or as my sister-in-law prefers, they never actually even left.

Simone completed her Journeyman at SAIT in the Painter Decorator program in 2010. She has her own business and works in Calgary.  She is meticulous and pays close attention to detail, skills necessary to be in her trade.
